The Sinol Story

I always believed that telling the beginnings of a product are important, especially when it comes to the people. The journey can be scary and consuming but when a certain medicine can change people’s lives, well,  to me, that really is the best part of the story.

Back in 2003, I was at one of our amazing family reunions on Lake Champlain. It’s a great small town where my Mom’s family has lived for nearly 200 years and that makes for a lot of cousins, personalities, stories, food and fun. The stories are always my favorite and are etched in my mind forever. During the reunion one of my cousins approached me and asked if I had Advil or Tylenol as they had a headache. Unfortunately, I did not have either and that’s when one of my older cousins chimed in and said “Grandpa use to use cayenne pepper on top of a shot of bourbon, he would drink it and his headache would go away”. Ha, I thought, he’s tricking him into doing this. Off we went to the kitchen, grabbed the cayenne and a bottle of whiskey, poured a shot and peppered the top of it. The shot was drank and followed by a dance and a few yelps as we all enjoyed the show. Within about 5 minutes his headache was gone. What? Stop! How could this be? My research began.

I was living in Westchester County in NY and was lucky to have a neighbor who was a doctor. He wasn’t just any doctor though, he was a neurologist at a prominent hospital in Manhattan and studied migraine. Off I went with a few cold beverages that I knew he liked and I found him tooling around outside. Paul, he yelled and waived as he saw me approaching. He told me to sit, we talked and slowly sipped our ice-cold beer. I explained to him what had transpired at my family reunion and he shook his head yes as he took another swig, “Capsaicin” he replied. I didn’t really know what that meant but he explained it to me. “Capsaicin is what is found in the pepper plant. It’s been recently studied and does relieve headaches”. Recently? My grandfather had been using it almost 90 years ago and why is it only being studied now? He had no idea why and explained to me that most headaches, migraines included, happen due to a crimp in the blood vessels not allowing blood to flow and it creates pain. I listened intensely and began asking all sorts of questions. He explained that if it could be put into a nasal spray it would be the most effective. Pepper up the nose huh? Yeah, I’m not thinking that’s such a good idea.

My research began and I found a lab that was willing to help make this new headache nasal spray. The first dozen lab batches were way too powerful, and I was the guinea pig trying this stuff, people close to me thought I had lost my mind. I never get headaches, but I wanted an all-natural solution that would potentially work. “Please use less capsaicin” was always my reply to the lab. After a few months we were getting very close to a well-tolerated formula and then we finally hit it right. We made a few hundred bottles and I started giving them out to friends and family. Soon we were supplying headache clinics and even the US Olympic team with our new Sinol Headache Nasal Spray. Then we were realizing it was working for allergies, colds and congestion. Poof, 2 decades later and we are still selling a great all-natural solution around the world. We all hope you enjoy it and tell everyone about it.
